Evolution
I’ve been involved in blog writing since 2000—mostly writing about sports. Most of these blogs were on the free platform at WordPress.com. Most of my readers were friends, family and the occasional person that somehow wandered in accidentally; the virtual version of walking into the wrong class on your first day of high school.
I’ve always been passionate about writing; I just never figured that I could use that skill to make money. So I kept pursuing my goal of becoming a successful actor. And yes, I understand that choosing acting over writing as a stable, money-making venture is an oxymoron.
All that changed in May 2009.
At that time, I suffered an unfortunate layoff. I don’t wish that hardship upon anyone. Shortly before that, I had already begun to work with a career expert to figure out which of my skills would be marketable, as I had already decided to begin making the career transition away from acting. Again and again, it came back to writing.
When the layoff happened, I decided to use my blog to my advantage. Additionally, I went back to school to pursue a Masters in Communication and Public Relations. By this point, I had identified this as a career where I could write and use some of my public speaking skills. Winner, winner, chicken dinner, as they say.
At that time, I purchased a web host and transitioned my sports blog into a WordPress.org blog. I stopped writing about sports on that platform (I still write about sports elsewhere—like http://www.fantasyfootballtrader.com), and began writing about social media/public relations. In addition, I created a page for the freelance writing work I had done.
I thought that would be the only merge I would make. I was wrong.
Over this past holiday, I had a long conversation with a public relations expert, who also happens to be one of my professors. I came to the realization that having my work embedded into this blog was not the “write” (I love the puns!) way to go about things. So I created a separate site for my online portfolio: www.jeremyfischer.net. That seems to have done the trick, as I’m getting far more interviews these days, and it makes it much easier to submit my work to people.
But that left the question: What to do with this blog?
So I took some time and decided that I don’t have nearly the amount of expertise yet to be blogging and offering my advice in social media/public relations. I think guys like Chris Brogan, Jay Baer, David Meerman Scott and Brian Solis are far more equipped to do that. And I had already successfully broken out my sports writing presence.
What to do?
After taking a long look at things, I realized three things: 1) There are a lot of young, first-time fathers out there, like myself, who are finding that the requirements of being a Dad are far different than was required of their fathers; 2) I needed somewhere to write about all facets of my life; and 3) I was becoming increasingly fascinated with Daddy blogging.
The light bulb went on and thus I give you….The Rebirth of Pop Rules!
In addition to blogging about all the things that I’m passionate about—sports, my daughter, my wife, my dog, public relations, social media, etc.—I will also try and come at things from the perspective of a new Dad. I will offer advice where I can. I’ll point out how things are different now, than in our father’s day. And I’ll provide resources appropriately.
Finally, I am very fascinated by video. I just got a new Flip camera. I know, I’m a little behind the times on that one. I’m also behind on mobile technology (i.e. I don’t own a smart phone), but I’m hoping to correct all that one day very soon. So I’ll be posting video as well. Let us just hope that the video doesn’t land me in divorce court!
And I’ll do all this with a good spirit and sense of humor.
It’s a large task, I know. But I believe that I’m up to it, and I hope that you all find a little something interesting in my unique take on things that you can laugh at, comment on, and use.
So welcome to the last version of my blog…The Rebirth of Pop Rules
(P.S. I’ll be posting this under the Evolution tab for permanent historical value!)

This blog contains my personal thoughts on being a young father in this day and age. Those thoughts and views that are mine and mine alone. They do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of anyone else, including my employers-current or future, my wife, or my daughter--though she's only two so I'm not sure that matters. Others that fall into this category are professors, colleagues, the President of the United States, Jon Stewart, or any of my Twitter followers.
There is agreement however, that my daughter is a cutie! (Picture on the Author Info page)
